3.2 Old Spice Commercial

  1. Describe in detail how the business implemented the four P’s to add value and/or promote the product or service.

In the Old Spice commercial it started by showing a light skin man who is incredibly fit in a bathroom just wearing a towel. He talks very fast and says “ladies look at me then look at your man then look at me” about four or five times. Then he pulls out an Old Spice bottle and tells us how manly it is and to no longer use a women body wash. The scene transitions to him on a yacht still shirtless and he holds tickets to what is our woman’s favorite show then has a handful full of diamonds trying to impress women. Then the scene transitions to him on a horse at the beach still shirtless holding an Old Spice bottle. Product was used in the commercial to tell us that it will make you manlier and more desirable by women. The commercial made you feel like you needed the product because it will satisfy your women or it increases your chance of getting a women. The product was compared to women’s favorite desires such as diamonds or tickets to her favorite show for the product will satisfy a hunger that women are looking for. In the commercial the price of the product was never mentioned or hinted. The company realized that if they made the product seem like it is in such high demand (by the women for the men) then the price does not come into factor when purchasing the product. The advertisement used promotion by communicating that the product is in high demand. They are saying that if you don’t have it then good luck at satisfying a women. The advertisement’s promotion was unique so even if you don’t like the product it got you enjoying and entertained by the commercial itself. The commercial was eye catching for so many things were happening scene after scene and it got us wondering what is going to happen next. Place was use in the commercial the scene of the body wash product started out in the bathroom which is where you use the product. Then the background changed to man on a boat in the ocean which relates to the smell of the product. then the scene switched to the man on a horse looking majestic with the beach in the background which represents how fresh you will look after using their product.

2. Describe the target market (ie. what segments are being targeted)?  How do you know this is the target market? Did the company make good decisions to reach the target market?

The target market is any male. The reason why you can tell is because the manly character tells us that its for us and to impress a women. Other than that you can tell because of how the man looks for he is in great shape and explains to us what he is doing and everything he is doing is considered manly according to social norms. The company did a great job explaining who they are targeting but could have done a better job on making the product seem more appealing to other markets. It focused a lot on males but if they wanted to they could have made it seem appealing to women but the commercial wanted to get the point across that its only for men and as a male it got me intrigued to at least try the product. After seeing the commercial I wanted to try the product because i was curious and now I’m a buyer of Old Spice because i like it and its not expensive compared to their competitors.

3. Does it work? Why or why not? Any general observations?

The advertising does work because like their competitor Dove for Men its unique from other products. The product itself isn’t unique but their advertising itself is because of how demanding and persistent it is. The advertising of the product doesn’t just tell us that the product will make us smell good but how it will also make us the most describable to other women in a sexual way. The commercial has the audience wondering if it really works or not and since the product isn’t expensive it has us experimenting with the product making us buyers. The commercial itself has me a buyer just for that reason.
